News in TV
I think I'm going to add another topic to discuss on my blog: News. After all I figure I'm going to school to learn and do it, so I have some small expertise in the field. At least enough to yak about it. In my investigative class a guy came in to talk, Tim Lennox...interesting lecture. He made a few points about commercial television that I agree with wholeheartedly. For instance, in commercial TV news station, watch thier reports, the sound bites last about 8 seconds. I always thought "Now how can they really be reporting the news effectively if they are giving the expert or the speaker only 8 seconds to talk?" Tim made an excellent point. He said if we, as reporters, could go back in time to the days of Lincoln and we were reporting on the Gettysburg address, what 8 seconds of that speech would we put in a news report? Fabulous. Because you could not sum up that great speech in 8 seconds...there is no way. He brought up some other great points like how print journalists (newspapers) have a section that is dedicated to the errors/corrections they made in the last newspaper. But do we have that for TV news? Nope. We just "assume" we are perfect. News. Psh. Glad it's not my life's calling.

LONDON, England (AP) - Queen Elizabeth II will use YouTube to send out her 50th televised annual Christmas message (read more).
It's a pleasure to see the older generation take advantage of the technology that is available to us.
NEWPORT BEACH, California (AP) - Former child star Danielle Fishel, a teen heartthrob on ABC's "Boy Meets World," was arrested this week on a drunken driving warrant from Los Angeles County (read more).
And for an inspirational story an Indiana man buys a $25,000 Dodge using coins he saved from vending machines (for more).
Talk about thrifty.

"Cola wars get physical as Pepsi worker attacks Coke employee"
Two employees from the rival companies got into a tiff over shelf space in the aisle of a Wal-Mart in Indiana. The Pepsi worker allegedly assaulted the Coca-Cola employee, hitting him in the face, giving him a black eye and breaking his nose. Police say the two were also accused of trying to run each other over with pallets full of soda bottles.
"Deputy nabbed twice for DUI -- by husband"
An off-duty jail deputy was pulled over and charged with driving under the influence -- by her husband, a fellow deputy. She supposedly left before he could give her a Breathalyzer test, so he pulled her over again and called for backup. She was placed on administrative leave.
"Workers killed after seeking raises"
A car dealership owner killed two employees because they kept asking for more pay. The employer told police he was having financial problems and was under a lot of stress.
"Alleged robber asks victim out for date"
After two men robbed a Domino's Pizza delivery woman, one of them called the victim from his cell phone to apologize -- and to ask her out.
"Four women fired for gossiping"
Four women employed in a small New Hampshire town were fired for gossiping about a relationship between the town administrator and a fellow co-worker. They were fired on the basis that "gossip, whispering and an unfriendly environment are causing poor morale and interfering with the efficient performance of town business."

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) - An accounting mix-up led to the wrong woman being crowned Miss California USA, and she's relinquished her crown to the rightful winner, organizers said Monday.
Christina Silva, 24, was declared the winner of the annual state beauty pageant, but she gave up the title to Raquel Beezley, who was originally named the second runner-up. Beezely, 21, will represent the state at the Miss USA pageant next April. (continue reading)

Sampson Parker stood Monday in what had been a cornfield, calm and relaxed and smiling. Behind him was the rusty old corn picker that almost took his life, but settled for his right arm.

The machine didn’t take the arm outright. It just grabbed hold of it and wouldn’t let go. It was only when sparks from the machine set the stubble-strewn field on fire and Parker faced the prospect of being burned alive that he did the only thing he could to save his life.
He cut off his own arm with a pocketknife...(continue).
Third wrong-sided brain surgery at R.I. hospital
If you need your brain operated on, don't go to Providence, Rhode Island to get it done. Rhode Island Hospital was fined %50,000 and reprimanded by the state Department of Health Monday after its third instance this year of a doctor performing brain surgery in the worng side of a patient's head...(continue).
